Key Points
- Osun governor Ademola Adeleke has quit the PDP over leadership crisis. He says the party’s national fight no longer matches his path.
- His resignation letter is dated November 4 yet surfaced this week. It went first to his Ede ward chairman before going online.
- Adeleke thanks PDP for backing his rise to senator and governor. He keeps silent on his next party as tension builds.
Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has confirmed that he has resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), ending his long run with the party that produced him as senator and later governor.

He announced the move in a post on his verified X handle late on Monday, sharing a scanned copy of his resignation letter.
In the note, dated 4 November 2025 and addressed to the PDP chairman of Sagba Abogunde Ward 2 in Ede North Local Government Area, Adeleke said he was leaving because of what he called a deep crisis in the party’s national leadership. He wrote that his decision takes effect at once and thanked the PDP for giving him the platform to win past elections.
The governor’s exit comes at a time many PDP figures are already worried about the party’s strength ahead of the next election circle.
It also adds a fresh twist to a wider run of defections and power plays shaping Nigeria’s opposition space, which has seen moves like Atiku Abubakar’s recent youth-focused pledge reported in this Atiku younger rival pledge story.
Why Adeleke left the PDP
In his resignation letter, Adeleke pointed straight at the PDP’s national crisis as his main reason for walking away. He said the ongoing fight in the party’s top ranks had reached a level where he could no longer remain a member in good faith.
“Due to the current crisis within the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party, I hereby resign my membership of the Peoples Democratic Party with immediate effect,” the letter read in part. He added that the party’s problems had dragged on without a clear fix, making it hard to plan for the next round of contests.
Adeleke also used the letter to look back on his rise under the PDP banner. He reminded ward leaders that he first entered the Senate on the party’s ticket before going on to win the 2022 Osun governorship poll. The governor said he remained grateful for those chances even as he moved on from the platform.
Reactions from PDP leaders in Osun had yet to come in detail at the time of filing this report. However, some party members online have described the move as a blow that could weaken the PDP even further before key races.
The news also lands as other stories, such as Trump’s warning on Nigeria listed in this Trump threats over Nigeria attacks, keep national politics on edge.
What Adeleke’s move means for Osun politics
Adeleke’s resignation is already sparking big questions about the 2026 Osun governorship race, which he is widely expected to contest again.
Since he has not said which party he plans to join, rivals and allies alike are watching to see whether he heads toward the ruling APC or another platform entirely.
For now, the governor remains in office because Nigeria’s constitution does not tie a governor’s seat to party membership after swearing-in.
Even so, leaving the PDP could shift how lawmakers and party structures around him line up, especially those who built their own careers in step with his.
Analysts say some of his backers may follow him out of the party, while others could stay back and form a new bloc inside the PDP.
Adeleke’s political journey has been closely watched since he won a 2017 by-election to represent Osun West in the Senate, then later defeated incumbent governor Gboyega Oyetola in the 2022 Osun poll.
His blend of grassroots dance-floor charm and family name recognition turned him into one of the PDP’s most visible governors in the South West.
So far, his resignation letter and X post do not name any new party or clear next step. Instead, they frame the move as a personal stand against what he sees as a broken leadership process at the PDP’s top level. That gap has left room for strong rumours but no firm answers about his new home.
Online reactions and Davido’s brief response
Beyond formal politics, Adeleke’s move has drawn quick reaction from fans online, especially because of his close ties to singer Davido (David Adedeji Adeleke).
The artist shared a short post on X, writing simply “Jeje…😇” while quoting the governor’s resignation note, a line many readers took as a quiet show of support.
Other X users have split between praising Adeleke for taking a bold stand and accusing him of chasing his own interest ahead of the PDP’s 2026 primary.
Some say his step could push more high-profile names to walk away from the party, while others insist it will force PDP leaders to finally fix long-running fights at the top. For now, the governor’s next party remains the biggest open question in Osun politics
