​A devastating building collapse in Anambra State claimed the lives of two people. The incident sparked outrage across the student community at Federal Polytechnic Oko.

​Rescue officials pulled the victims from the rubble of the Elite 5-Star Hostel in Amaokpala. Friends quickly identified one of the deceased victims as Vivian Chinedum. She recently graduated from the Department of Food Science and Technology.

​Ignored warnings and structural failure

​The 60-room building caved in completely on Sunday, July 26, 2026. Prior occupants allegedly received directives to vacate the premises due to severe structural decay.

​However, the caretaker ignored these clear warnings. He reportedly continued renting the unsafe rooms to new students. This dangerous decision ultimately led to the fatal disaster.

​Survivor Grace Nweke moved into the hostel in January 2026. She confirmed she knew nothing about the dangerous condition of the property.

​Nweke explained the terrifying moments before the collapse. A food vendor alerted residents on WhatsApp at 10 p.m. about cracking walls. This quick message saved the lives of several students.

​Many occupants heard loud cracking sounds shortly after the alert. They immediately fled the building for their safety.

​Friends mourn fresh graduate Vivian Chinedum

​Vivian Chinedum moved into the ill-fated hostel in March 2026. She worked as a baker while completing her academic program.

​Friends and classmates flooded social media to mourn her tragic passing. A Facebook user named Jenny Jenny shared photos of the wreckage. She posted these images alongside a short tribute to her friend.

​”Rip Vivian,” she wrote.

​Another friend named Power O Philemon expressed his deep shock online. He shared his disbelief regarding the sudden loss of his friend.

​”Terrible terrified me,abormination and unbelievable to me right now. Oko is seriously passing through pain right now Vivian I can’t believe this for life Death has done his worst. ​Rescue teams recover victims

​National Emergency Management Agency officials arrived to search the debris. Local rescue workers assisted them in pulling victims from the wreckage. They worked tirelessly to clear the heavy concrete.

​Emergency teams placed the recovered bodies into bags before leaving the site. Authorities have not yet released the identity of the deceased male victim.
