The former security chief insists CCTV footage proves the late military ruler died differently.
Major Hamza Al-Mustapha has strongly denied recent claims about the final moments of General Sani Abacha. The former security chief rejected a book by a former DSS operative. He stated that CCTV footage in his possession proves the controversial account of the late military ruler is entirely false.
Major Hamza Al-Mustapha has officially rejected new claims about the death of General Sani Abacha. The former Chief Security Officer dismissed the disputed story on July 25, 2026.
A former DSS operative named Amachree recently published a book detailing the event. Al-Mustapha addressed journalists in Kaduna to clear the air. He insisted that the disputed story of his final night is completely false.
CCTV footage contradicts book
The former security chief stated that outside forces guided the author. He confirmed that he has raw video evidence to back his stance.
”The boy was asked to write the lies by others. I have all the CCTV footages of what happened in my custody, so what he said are not true.” Al-Mustapha declared.
Al-Mustapha asked the public to ignore the spreading rumors. He explained that attacking a dead person is highly unfair. The former officer maintained his loyalty to his late boss.
”Just ignore his lies. It’s bad to say such things on someone that is dead.” He added.
The disputed timeline of events
General Sani Abacha died suddenly on June 8, 1998. The new book presents a very different timeline of that morning.
Amachree claims an Igbo lady visited the Aso Rock Guest House. She reportedly arrived from the Nicon Noga Hilton Hotel around 2:40 a.m. The woman brought her younger sister who worked as a pharmacist.
”At approximately 2.40 a.m., shortly after Gen. Useni left, Abacha’s girlfriend, an Igbo lady, arrived at the Aso Rock Guest House from the Nicon Noga Hilton Hotel. With her was her younger sister, a pharmacist who was in Abuja for a conference. The Head of State had just bought his girlfriend a new SUV, and they decided to stop by to say hello to ‘Oga’. Abacha was taken with the younger sister, and after a short while, the girlfriend returned to the hotel, leaving the pharmacist alone with the Head of State.” Amachree wrote.
The book alleges that the leader and the pharmacist became intimate. It claims he suddenly stopped moving around 4:05 a.m.
”At about 4.05 a.m., as they were getting intimate, the pharmacist realized Abacha had stopped moving. She called out to him, but he was unresponsive and stiff. She checked his pulse; there was none.” The former operative noted.
The author claims the young woman panicked immediately. She reportedly dressed quickly and left the guest house. She allegedly lied to guards to get a car back to her hotel.
”In a state of panic, she quickly dressed and left the guest house, telling the soldier in guard duty that ‘Oga’ had asked for a car to take her back to her hotel.” Amachree detailed.
