A major academic scandal has rocked Abia State University. Management quickly suspended the Head of the Anatomy Department over severe misconduct claims.
The controversy centres on Dr. Agbai Johnson Ukwa. Reports suggest he forced students to pay huge sums to pass exams. This mirrors the outrage when federal universities faced intense scrutiny for staff misconduct last year.
Severe Extortion Claims
Education expert Alex Onyia shared the disturbing details online. He accused the lecturer of serious grade manipulation.
”charges as high as N1.5m to pass MBBS exam,” Onyia stated.
Onyia first identified Dr. Ukwa as the department head. He claimed the lecturer withheld graduation approvals to force payments. Students who refused the demands faced failing grades or missing scripts.
Five-Year Record Review
The Abia State Government quickly stepped in to address the crisis. Officials have expanded the scope of the probe entirely.
”The Abia State Government has intensified its investigation and is reviewing results and mark sheets for all students in the Uni for the past 5 years,” he wrote.
This massive audit could affect many past students. Authorities might revoke degrees if they find proof of fraud. The state wants to clean up the university system.
”Some graduates’ results may be cancelled after this investigation,” Onyia noted.
Neither the university nor the suspended lecturer has spoken publicly yet. The official findings remain pending as of July 22, 2026.
”This is the most thorough academic investigation at any Nigerian university so far,” the expert added.
