A Nigerian man of the Igbo tribe has alleged that the name America is an Igbo name that simply means ‘Emerigom nkea’ translated to English as ‘I’ve defeated/conquered this one’.
In a viral video currently making the rounds on the Internet, this Igbo Chief was captured alongside his fellow Chief as he made the controversial statement.
The Chief also claimed that America was founded by a black man. He backed his claim with the anecdote of civilization starting in Africa.
Holding up the interview Dimma Arts and Craft’s microphone in his hand, the man said with all confidence, “The name America is an Igbo name, and the real meaning is ‘Emerigom nke a’. Ask anybody. The founder of America is black. No matter what the English people say, and that will take us back. Even the English people said civilization started in Africa.”
However, his colleague beside him couldn’t hide his countenance as it clearly demonstrated that the man’s statement was somewhat out of context.

Netizens have also reacted to the man’s unverified statement. Some reactions read below.
maaziokunammiri: “What is the persons name? What year did he arrive to “emerigom nke a?” How many were they? And how many red indians did they fight? Even if your claim was true, is it really something to be proud of, that your people went into another man’s land, killed them all and take over their land? It is 20th century maazi. Abeg o!
“Besides When somebody starts a statement with ‘ask anybody’ the person dey talk trash. You are trying to convince everybody and yet want everybody to ask anybody. So one half of you know something the other doesn’t know!”
tkinzystar: “That man by his side is so ashamed on his behalf. Which kind Ilie is this na ???”
iphyokoli: “Oga America is not pronounce the way you pronounced it. If you pronounce it well the way it should be pronounce it will not sound Igbo. Also, your logic has no bearing or better still provide your source and stop confusing people. See the origin of America.
“The naming of the Americas, or America, occurred shortly after Christopher Columbus’s first voyage to the Americas in 1492. It is generally accepted that the name derives from Amerigo Vespucci, the Italian explorer, who explored the new continents in the following years on behalf of Spain and Portugal.”
