The Nigerian leader wants medical professionals abroad to help fix the national health sector
President Bola Tinubu met with diaspora medical professionals at the State House on July 24, 2026. He urged Nigerian health workers living abroad to return home. The leader promised better working conditions to reverse the massive brain drain affecting the national health sector.
President Bola Tinubu has asked Nigerian medical professionals living abroad to return home. He wants them to help develop the nation.
The President hosted members of the Nigerian Diaspora Medical Associations on July 24, 2026. Abike Dabiri-Erewa led the health workers to the meeting. She is the Director General of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission.
During the State House meeting, the Nigerian leader shared his personal story. He recalled leaving his comfortable life in the United States.
”I’ve been through that journey. I’m home, and I can tell you, there’s nowhere like home. I’ve experienced being in America. I’ve taken the best of America in my chosen profession, accountancy and finance.” The President told the visiting doctors.
Tackling the brain drain
Thousands of Nigerian doctors and nurses have left the country recently. They often seek better pay in Western countries. This massive exit has severely weakened the national health sector.
Tinubu wants to reverse this dangerous trend quickly. He believes diaspora professionals hold the key to national growth.
”I can’t forget the Standard Oil Building in Chicago and my first week there. But since I came back from Mobil to now, it has been a very good challenge to commit and endure the possibility of turning Nigeria around.” He said to the medical team. His personal story aims to inspire confidence.
”So many of you have seen the hazards of the other side of the world. You’ve experienced the tribulation and challenges, and you’ve come back home to feel it and seal it.” The leader noted during the meeting.
Renewed hope agenda
The President promised to create a safe space for returning doctors. He claimed his administration will reward their hard work. The government is currently building better hospital facilities.
”My friends who are still there, try to attract them home. But the best way to demonstrate to you is for me to commit myself to my agenda, the Renewed Hope, so that the hope of Nigerians of having a better environment, better education, better development and prosperity can be realised.”
The President declared to the group. He urged them to spread this positive message abroad.
”Your children will see the foundation of this country as belonging to them, and the future belonging to them is what we are working hard for. Your coming to help is immeasurable.” He concluded his passionate speech.
