Ituma Chukwuemeka, chief executive of Enviable Motors, has stirred debate online. He says his iPhone 17 Pro shows as iPhone XR during WhatsApp setup. He adds the mismatch proves Apple only upgraded the XR line.

Chukwuemeka posted blurry screenshots of the Settings page and transfer screen. One story reads, “I bought this phone in America pre order.” Another slide reads, “Apple actually upgraded XR to iPhone 17 Pro”, echoing recent iPhone 17 clone concerns.
What the posts show
The Settings shot lists iOS 26.0.1 and the model 17 Pro. Capacity shows 1.02 terabytes with a warranty expiring in 2026. The WhatsApp page asks for a code to move chats to this phone.
What Apple has or hasn’t said
Apple has not said the iPhone 17 Pro is an XR upgrade. Old device names can appear during transfers when accounts link across phones. Clone units can also spoof menus, so checks still matter.
He says he preordered the phone in the United States. Many buyers import units into Nigeria through dealers or friends. Service and payment features can vary by region and carrier.
This month has seen many claims over device identity and swaps. One popular case features a star proving her phone in water. Read our report on Nkechi Blessing XR claims for a recent example.
If you buy high-end phones, check model numbers in About. Match the model on Apple’s coverage site and confirm IMEI status. Ask for receipts, warranty cards, and a short live camera test.
