The Headies organizers pushed back forcefully against Gaise Baba’s allegations of neglecting gospel music in their annual celebrations. The academy issued a lengthy clarification following intense debate over category snubs across social media.
The dispute erupted shortly after officials unveiled the official heavyweight contenders for their upcoming ceremony. On August 30, 2026, the committee published extensive archives to disprove claims of bias against spiritual records. The organizers maintained that factual records demonstrate continuous support for faith creators over the last two decades.
Historic Mainstream Wins for Gospel Stars
The committee highlighted several gospel stars who conquered major competitive categories against secular giants. Lara George earned a nomination for Ijoba Orun in 2008 before winning Best Vocal Performance in 2010.
”Gospel and inspirational artists have not merely been nominated,” the committee wrote. “They have won major general categories against the strongest mainstream competition of their time,” officials noted.
The late Kefee captured Best Collaboration in 2010 for her massive track Kokoroko featuring Timaya. Timi Dakolo won Recording of the Year in 2010 with Heaven Please ahead of Banky W and P-Square. He later swept three awards in 2015 for his soul ballad Wish Me Well.
Nikki Laoye also secured Best Vocal Performance in 2013 with Only You ahead of Seyi Shay. The organizers noted that these victories prove gospel creators always had access to top general honors.
Dedicated Slots and Judging Standards
The academy created the Best Inspirational Single award in 2022 to expand stage opportunities for spiritual records. Kcee and Okwesili Eze Group won in 2022, followed by Neon Adejo in 2023. Mercy Chinwo took the prize in 2025 while Anendlessocean contested in the general male vocal bracket.
The board also explained why they exclude certain technical areas like disc jockeying and specific instruments. Officials stated that fair assessment requires credible criteria and consistent annual bodies of work from entrants.
”A category without credible criteria doesn’t honour artists, it diminishes the award,” the organizers declared.
The academy screens about 50 eligible entries per category before selecting the final six contenders. Many quality tracks miss the shortlist simply because competition remains extremely tough across all fields. Organizers stressed that missing the nomination list never implies that the screening team ignored the record.
Live Broadcast Growth and Stage Rotation
The Headies expanded from 22 categories in its early years to 35 categories today. This rapid growth prevents television producers from presenting every single plaque during the live television broadcast.
”To address this fairly, The Headies operates an internal category rotation system,” the academy explained.
The Inspirational category forms part of this rotating schedule across successive award nights. The production crew rotates untelevised segments to keep the lengthy broadcast engaging for global viewers. The organization emphasized that rotation reflects broadcast logistics rather than disrespect toward gospel talents.
The committee welcomed constructive feedback while urging industry commentators to base their critiques on factual history. They reaffirmed their commitment to celebrating inspirational records alongside mainstream Afrobeats releases in future editions.
