Nigerian singer Tekno sparks a massive debate after revealing the true pioneers of the genre
Nigerian singer Augustine Miles Kelechi, known as Tekno, ignited a major debate on August 28, 2026, by claiming Fela Anikulapo-Kuti is not the sole originator of Afrobeats. Speaking in New York, Tekno argued that Eastern highlife legends like Oliver De Coque actually pioneered the famous global sound.
The popular Nigerian musician sparked a massive online debate regarding the true origins of Afrobeats. He openly rejected the widely accepted narrative surrounding the legendary Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.
Tekno visited Hot 97 FM in New York for a recent interview. He used the platform to share his controversial perspective on music history. The singer argued that highlife veterans deserve equal recognition.
Challenging the established narrative
The artist made a bold declaration during his conversation with the American radio hosts. He firmly stated his stance on the genre’s history.
“Fela is not the originator of Afrobeats,” Tekno stated.
Music historians widely credit Fela with pioneering the original Afrobeat sound in the 1970s. However, modern Afrobeats draws from multiple African influences. Tekno believes his native Eastern region contributed heavily to this evolution.
“Lagos people and the Yorubas might say he is the one, but I am from the East, and we had legends like Oliver De Coque,” he explained. “Oliver De Coque made pure highlife music. Highlife is also Afrobeats.”
Global reach versus local impact
Oliver De Coque dominated the Nigerian music scene with his unique Ogene highlife sound. He released dozens of successful albums before his death.
Tekno acknowledged Fela’s massive influence on the global stage. He noted that international tours helped solidify Fela’s legendary pioneer status. However, he insisted that other talented African musicians simply lacked the same exposure.
“Fela gets all the credit because he travelled and performed with his band around the world,” the singer argued. “To some people, he is the originator of Afrobeats, but to me, there are a bunch of them – legends that no one speaks about.”
Deep musical roots
The modern pop star has frequently showcased his appreciation for older styles. He previously cited Fela as the inspiration behind his hit track Rara.
Despite this respect for the Afrobeat pioneer, Tekno highlighted his own cultural background. He grew up listening to traditional sounds from his home region. This childhood exposure shaped his current musical identity.
“I would say I was more inspired by Oliver De Coque and his peers from the East,” Tekno concluded. “My dad used to play his music a lot.”
