Erica Nlewedim revealed on August 14, 2026, that she had a deeply lonely childhood as an only child. Speaking on the TokeMoments podcast, the BBNaija star shared how her strict single mother kept her locked indoors, forcing her to develop intense survival skills early in life.

Erica Nlewedim recently peeled back the curtain on her early years. The Big Brother Naija star sat down for a rare, emotional chat. She detailed the extreme isolation she faced while growing up with a strict single mother.
Locked inside the house
Erica explained that she did not have a normal, active childhood. Her mother completely banned her from going out to play. The actress spent most of her early years completely alone in her room.
Her mother took extreme measures to ensure her safety while away. Erica revealed that her mum would often lock the doors from the outside. She spent countless hours just reading books and dreaming of freedom.
”Growing up single, like just my mom, no siblings, no dad. And my mom was very strict. I used to get locked up inside the house so I didn’t have the chance to hang out with my friends. So I had to learn to rely on myself,” the actress recalled.
This intense isolation naturally forced her to become highly independent. She learned how to survive without relying on anyone else. However, she still deeply missed the bond of having brothers or sisters.
The heavy price of friendship
Her lonely childhood profoundly affected her adult relationships. Because she lacks siblings, she places a massive burden on her female friends. She admitted that losing a close friend hurts her much more than losing a romantic partner.
Host Toke Makinwa asked her directly about this emotional dynamic. Makinwa wanted to know which type of breakup caused her the most pain. Erica did not hesitate with her answer.
”Friendship, because you just imagine that you’ll be with them forever. For a man, you’re like ‘Okay, there’s a chance that we might break up,'” she confessed.
Erica noted that she carries her close friends on her head. She expects female friendships to serve as her chosen family. Unfortunately, she soon realised the entertainment industry is full of fake friends.
Cutting off industry rivals
The actress struggled to find genuine female bonds after finding fame. She discovered that many new friends were secretly competing with her. This toxic energy forced her to heavily guard her inner circle.
”You go into that friendship and then you now realize that this person is just competing with you. So you’re just like, okay, if you want to compete now, I don’t want to pretend to be your friend. I will compete with you,” Erica stated firmly.

She now relies almost entirely on her day-one friends. Erica noted she only trusts people who knew her before she became a national star. She proudly acts as the non-judgmental safe space for her trusted inner circle.
