During the chat, Ycee noted that his primary issue is the moral decay in Nigeria. He stated that people now use money to excuse terrible behaviour.
”Like, I hate what the pursuit of money has done to us as a society,” the rapper declared.
The conversation surrounding his words had sparked strong reactions across the industry. Some artists recently pushed back against his perceived stance to support younger content creators. Ycee insisted he never meant to insult anyone’s hustle.
”There are countries that are like worse off, like war-torn countries, that don’t behave as badly as some Nigerians behave,” he said.
He pointed out how financial success currently covers up character flaws. This culture prompted his earlier remarks.
”And it’s like everybody’s excuse is, you know, I mean as long as you make money,” Ycee noted.
Elitism claims and education
The rapper then directly addressed the controversial tag that started the online debate. He firmly distanced himself from creating the viral term. He stressed that he only commented on a popular topic.
”The whole Olodo uprising frenzy, like, you know, I didn’t coin the phrase,” the star stated.
Ycee expressed frustration over how critics painted him as arrogant. He felt the public wrongly assumed he felt superior due to his background.
”I feel like a lot of people miss my point and were trying to make it seem like, oh, I was being classist and elitist because I have some level of, you know, education,” he said.
To prove his point, the musician shared surprising details about his schooling. He confessed he never actually completed higher education. The star wanted to clarify his academic status to his critics.
”Mind you, I just have my school cert oh,” Ycee revealed.
”I don’t have a uni degree,” he added.
The artist recalled his early love for words and learning. He admitted that his focus eventually faded as he grew older.
”At some point, I even read like the whole dictionary,” the rapper noted.
”I did, I can’t read anymore man,” he said.
He explained that he struggles to engage with books today. He suspects an undiagnosed condition might have affected his attention span. He eventually gave up on reading entirely.
”I don’t know whether it’s ADHD I’ll call it or whatever, but it got to a point where I couldn’t even read in school,” Ycee confessed.
”Like SS2, I was like, yeah bro, like I’m done with this,” he stated.
Unilag dreams and admission limits
Despite his struggles, Ycee had big plans for university. He confirmed his original goal was to enter the tech field.
”Computer Science,” the star replied when asked about his preferred course.
He shared his disappointment about missing the admission marks for the University of Lagos. The strict quota system blocked his entry at the time. This forced him to abandon his tech dreams.
”You know, and it’s just sad that at the time I didn’t get, like, I couldn’t meet the cutoff to study Computer Science in Unilag,” Ycee explained.
The interviewer pointed out that schools have recently lowered their required scores. Ycee agreed and joked about trying again.
”Yeah, they reduced it, yeah,” he agreed.
”Maybe now if I wrote JAMB now maybe I would have… I would have gotten Computer Science,” the rapper concluded.
