Madonna revisits Tupac romance: Stern clip revives Letterman shock

Stern’s archived interview revives her Tupac link and Letterman night.

Howard Stern’s newly surfaced Madonna interview has put her old Tupac Shakur romance back in focus, along with her wild March 31, 1994 David Letterman appearance. The clip revisits how the secret 1993 to 1994 relationship shaped her mood, her words, and the TV backlash.

The Howard Stern Show posted the clip on YouTube this week as part of its archive push. The interview sends viewers back to Madonna’s 2015 chat with Stern. She opened up about Tupac and her tense Letterman visit.

Madonna and Tupac Shakur dated secretly from 1993 to 1994, according to later reports and Madonna’s own comments. The romance also drove fresh attention back to her March 31, 1994 Late Show with David Letterman appearance.

Howard Stern revisits the romance

Howard Stern asked, “I always wondered if you actually liked David Letterman or if you were just annoyed with him.” Madonna answered, “That’s how I flirt with people.” Stern then said, “It seemed contentious and uncomfortable.” Madonna replied, “One time I was mad at him… but that interview? I was just in a weird mood.”

She tied that mood to Tupac. Madonna said, “Tupac had me all riled up about life in general.” Stern said, “I didn’t even know you dated Tupac. That’s shocking to me.” Madonna added, “I think people know… if you’re in the know.” She also said she felt “very gangster.”

Letterman still shadows the story

Madonna’s March 31, 1994 Late Show appearance drew huge heat at the time. People later described it as the most censored network talk-show episode in history. Her expletives and refusal to leave the stage drove the backlash.

Rosie Perez later said she helped bring Madonna and Tupac together in 1993. She said Tupac stepped in as her date to the Soul Train Music Awards, then Madonna asked for an introduction. That added another layer to the pair’s secret romance.

The Howard Stern Show’s YouTube rollout has also revived older celebrity interviews. The Stern Show said the platform will host its biggest guests and most revealing talks. That move has pushed Madonna’s clip back into the spotlight.
