Northumbria Police charge Reform UK politician following an investigation into an offensive social media update
Northumbria Police have charged 66-year-old Reform UK councillor Glenn Gibbins under the Communications Act 2003. Authorities launched a full investigation after receiving a public complaint in May 2024. Gibbins will appear before the South Tyneside Magistrates Court on August 21 to face charges over an offensive online post.

The 66-year-old official represents a ward in the Sunderland area. Police began their probe into the councillor in May 2024. They acted quickly after residents flagged the offensive digital content.
The Offensive Social Media Post
Gibbins published the disputed statement on his personal page on March 19, 2024. The text directly targeted the local Nigerian community.
”Carnt believe amount of nigerians in town…..should melt them all down and fill in the pot holes!!”
Gibbins wrote the statement on his social media account. Northumbria Police reviewed the digital evidence and submitted a full case file. The Crown Prosecution Service then authorized the formal criminal charge.
Party Warning And Upcoming Court Date
Reform UK suspended the official while they conducted an internal review. The political party later reinstated him but issued a final written warning.
A party spokesperson confirmed they will closely monitor the upcoming court outcome. Gibbins must attend the South Tyneside Magistrates Court on August 21. Police have warned the public against speculating about the active legal case.
