In a revealing glimpse into her life, Joanne Kelly, daughter of the notorious R. Kelly, has spoken candidly about her relationship with her father in the upcoming documentary, “R. Kelly’s Karma: A Daughter’s Journey.”
Set to premiere on the Tvei Network on October 11, the film explores the complexities of familial ties strained by scandal and conviction.
No Meetings with Grandpa
In a poignant moment from the documentary trailer released on Sunday, the expectant mother made it clear that she has no intention of introducing her future son to his grandfather, who is currently serving a 30-year sentence for multiple charges, including sex trafficking.
“If my son asks questions, I’m going to be as truthful as possible,” she revealed. “And I will not be taking my son to prison to meet his grandfather.”

Joanne, appearing visibly pregnant in the clip, reflects on her childhood with R. Kelly, whose real name is Robert Kelly. While she recalls him fondly as “my everything,” she acknowledges that their bond has been irrevocably altered since his conviction in September 2021.
“For a long time, I didn’t even want to believe that it happened,” she shared, grappling with the shocking complexity of her father’s actions. “Nobody wants to be the child of the father that is out here hurting women and children.”
The Weight of Conviction
Joanne’s emotional turmoil is evident as she navigates her father’s legacy. Her life was fundamentally changed by his criminal behaviour. “I really feel like that one millisecond completely just changed my whole life,” she confided, referring to the moment of her father’s sentencing.
With R. Kelly now incarcerated in Chicago’s Metropolitan Correctional Center, their relationship remains strained, with Joanne expressing a deep sense of loss.
Drea Kelly, Joanne’s mother and R. Kelly’s ex-wife, also contributes her voice to the documentary. Married to the singer from 1996 to 2009, Drea has been outspoken about her ex-husband’s shortcomings as a parent.

“Just because you’re not a good husband, doesn’t mean you can’t be a good father. And the fact that he didn’t even try,” the 50-year-old lamented. Drea emphasised that while the pain inflicted upon her was personal, the impact on their children was entirely unnecessary: “What he did to me, he did to me. But you didn’t have to do it to my damn kids.”
A Broader Perspective
The documentary will delve further into the Kelly family’s experiences, featuring appearances from Joanne’s siblings, Jaah Kelly and Robert Kelly Jr.
With R. Kelly facing an extensive prison sentence that includes a 20-year term for separate child sex crimes, the story of the Kelly family continues to unfold against a backdrop of pain, betrayal, and resilience.
In a world where family loyalty is tested by difficult truths, “R. Kelly’s Karma: A Daughter’s Journey” promises to be a raw and unfiltered look into the life of a woman navigating the legacy of her father amidst the fallout of his actions.
As Joanne prepares for motherhood, her story stands as both a cautionary tale and a beacon of strength for others facing similar challenges.null
