Allegations and Arrest Experience
Popular Nigerian singer, Paul Okoye, also known as Rudeboy, has revealed that his twin brother, Peter Okoye, who goes by Mr P, was behind his recent brush with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
In a candid interview with City FM, Lagos, Rudeboy disclosed that Mr P wrote a petition accusing him of fraudulent activities, prompting the EFCC to invite him for questioning.
Rudeboy recounted his unexpected ordeal with the anti-graft agency. “This year, I was called in by the EFCC after they got a complaint from my brother. I never thought our disagreements would escalate to this level. I thought it was all about music,” he explained.
Upon his arrival at the EFCC office, Rudeboy was confronted with detailed questions about his financial transactions. “People started asking me, ‘What do you do?’ Some even told me I might end up in jail for 20 years,” he lamented. The singer described his shock when he was asked to provide a lawyer and sureties, realizing the gravity of the situation.
Cleared of Charges but No Apology
After a thorough investigation, the EFCC eventually cleared Rudeboy of all allegations. The agency confirmed that there was no evidence of fraud linked to him. “One month ago, the EFCC called me, my twin brother, and our elder brother Jude Okoye. They informed us, ‘Paul is innocent. We have found no proof of any wrongdoing,'” Rudeboy narrated.
Despite his exoneration, Rudeboy expressed disappointment that Mr P has refused to apologize for the false accusations. “Even after being proven innocent, my twin brother didn’t apologize for the baseless allegations,” he said with a hint of sadness.
The revelation has sent shockwaves through their fanbase, given the public nature of their bond and musical collaboration. It remains to be seen whether this incident will deepen the rift between the brothers or if there will be a path to reconciliation.
This familial discord underscores the complexities that can arise even within the closest of relationships, especially under the glaring spotlight of public opinion.
Rudeboy’s full statement below.
“This year, I was invited by the EFCC after they received a petition against me from my twin brother. I never thought it [our beef] would get to this extent. I thought it was just music,” he said.
“The next thing, people are asking me, ‘What do you do?’ Somebody said, ‘You’re going to go to jail for 20 years. They’re going to lock you up.’ I got to the EFCC office, they told me everything. They’ve already printed all my account statements. They asked me to explain every transaction.
“First of all, what entered my mind was, what if I was into fraud? That’s how my brother would have finished me? But I took it. Then they started the investigation. At a point, I was no longer comfortable with the kind of questions they were asking me. When I knew it was serious was when they asked me to get a lawyer and sureties. I did everything.
“One month ago, they called me, my twin brother and our elder brother [Jude Okoye], and said, ‘First of all, we have to say that after all investigations, Paul is innocent. Paul is cleared. Everything you accused him of, we’ve done our investigation and he’s innocent.’
