Senator’s untimely death shocks Anambra South

Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who represented the Anambra South Senatorial Zone, has tragically passed away after suffering a heart attack in London. The senator, affiliated with the All Progressives Congress (APC), reportedly died in London, United Kingdom, on Tuesday. His death has sent shockwaves through his constituency and the broader political landscape in Nigeria.

Ubah travelled to London just two days ago for a medical check-up. Unfortunately, he did not survive. The news of his passing has left many in mourning, particularly his family and close political associates.

Political aspirations

Senator Ubah was more than just a sitting senator; he was also a prominent figure in the upcoming Anambra State governorship election. Ubah had recently joined the APC, positioning himself as a key contender for the party’s ticket. Just two days ago, his campaign council made a significant monetary donation of ₦71 million, which includes ₦50 million from him, to support the Anambra APC, showcasing his dedication and commitment to his party and constituents.

In addition to his political endeavours, Ubah was a family man. He was married to Uchenna, a Business Administration graduate from Ahmadu Bello University in Nigeria. Together, they had five children. Ubah also founded and ran the Ifeanyi Ubah Foundation, which aimed to support various charitable ventures and social initiatives.

Challenges and survival

Ubah’s death follows not long after a significant loss for the Igbo community: the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, who passed away a few days prior. The loss of these two prominent figures has cast a pall over Anambra and the broader Nigerian community.

In a testament to his resilience and fortitude, Ubah survived an assassination attempt just a year ago in September 2022. While travelling to Nnewi in Enugwu-Ukwu, Anambra State, his convoy was attacked by gunmen. The assailants opened fire, killing at least five people, including two policemen. Ubah survived this brutal attack, thanks to the bulletproof vehicle he was travelling in.

The legacy of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah will be remembered for his political ambition, dedication to his constituents, and unyielding spirit in the face of adversity. His untimely death leaves a void in Anambra South that will be difficult to fill.
