Lagos, Nigeria – In a remarkable feat of artistic brilliance, Nigerian doctor and hyper-realism artist Fola David has shattered the Guinness World Record for the largest drawing by an individual. The record-breaking attempt, which began on July 16 at the Onikan Stadium in Lagos, has captivated the Nigerian public and gained international attention.
David, a visual artist based in Lagos, set out to create a colossal work of art spanning 1,000 square meters, showcasing the diverse cultures and traditions of Nigeria. The six-day challenge saw the artist and his dedicated team working tirelessly, determined to surpass the previous record of 629.98 square meters.
On the fourth day of the attempt, at 9 pm, David triumphantly announced on social media that they had broken the existing record. However, the artist remained undeterred, as his ultimate goal was to exceed 1,000 square meters of canvas covered in intricate drawings.
“Congratulations to us all,” David wrote in his now-viral post. “On Day 4 at 9 pm, we broke the current record of 629.98 square metres, but we are not done! As the goal is to get over 1,000 square metres of canvas covered in drawings; we are currently at 689 square metres. Let’s Go!”
The record-breaking attempt has attracted a remarkable array of notable Nigerians, including the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi; former Guinness World Record holder Hilda Baci; and Farooq Oreagba, the businessman who stole the show at the 2024 Ojude Oba Festival.
The management of the College of Medicine, University of Lagos (CMUL), where David is an alumnus, also visited the artist to show their unwavering support for his groundbreaking achievement.
