Larry Hoover’s Road to Freedom Isn’t Over Yet — Illinois Sentence Still Stands

Key Points:

  • Donald Trump commuted Larry Hoover’s federal sentence, but his Illinois life sentence still stands.
  • Hoover must now petition the Illinois Prisoner Review Board to move forward with his case.
  • His son thanks Kanye West and Alice Marie Johnson for supporting the fight for Hoover’s freedom.

Former gang leader Larry Hoover may be one step closer to freedom, but he still has a long journey ahead.

Even though Donald Trump cut his federal sentence, Hoover remains locked up because of another sentence from the state of Illinois. That one hasn’t changed.

Hoover, now 74, is still serving a life sentence for a murder he committed in 1973. He was also given more time in 1997 for leading a gang while already in prison. Trump commuted those federal charges, but the state sentence is still in full effect.

The Illinois Governor’s office made it clear — they won’t bend the rules. They said Larry Hoover must follow legal steps to seek parole or clemency.

Still in Prison in Colorado

Hoover is still being held at a high-security federal prison in Florence, Colorado.

A spokesperson for the Federal Bureau of Prisons told TMZ Hip Hop that Hoover has not yet been moved. They are still working through paperwork and security checks before any transfer.

Even though his federal sentence was cut, Hoover won’t be walking free anytime soon. He has to deal with his Illinois case first.

How He Can Try for Freedom

To move forward, Hoover must go through the Illinois Prisoner Review Board (PRB).

This board handles decisions about parole and makes suggestions to the Governor for clemency. That means they can suggest that the Governor reduce or remove his sentence. But they don’t make the final call. The Governor does.

Governor JB Pritzker’s office said they follow the law closely, unlike what happened at the federal level. They stressed that Hoover’s case must go through the proper legal process.

Help from Kanye West and Alice Marie Johnson

Despite these challenges, Larry Hoover’s son, Larry Hoover Jr., stays hopeful.

He thanked music star Kanye West and justice reform leader Alice Marie Johnson for helping bring attention to his father’s case. Both have spoken out in support of Hoover’s release.

Hoover Jr. believes their support and public pressure could help change things.
