- He stressed that unity among entertainers could shape Nigeria’s political future. Odule urged actors to use their influence responsibly.
Veteran Nollywood actor Dele Odule has shared his thoughts on why many of his colleagues failed to rally behind actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele during her 2023 political campaign in Lagos State.

According to Odule, if the movie industry had stood firmly behind Akindele, she would have made a much greater impact in the state’s election. The veteran actor suggested that fear and self-interest kept most entertainers silent, even though they privately admired her courage.
In his words, “If all actors had supported Funke Akindele, she would have shaken Lagos State.” Odule’s statement came during a recent interview where he analysed how entertainment influence could reshape politics if used collectively.
Akindele, who is also known as Jennifer, contested as the deputy governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos during the 2023 general elections.
Despite her large fan base and strong social media following, her campaign fell short against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Funke Akindele opens up on post-election lessons revealed that the actress gained valuable insight about leadership and perseverance through the experience.
Odule further explained that Nollywood’s internal divisions and political fears prevented a united front. He said many actors were worried about losing future government support or brand deals if they backed an opposition candidate.
He argued that this lack of solidarity weakened Akindele’s reach, noting that the entertainment sector holds enough power to shift political conversations in Nigeria when united.
The veteran called for better cooperation among creative professionals, insisting that entertainers must recognise their social influence and use it to inspire political accountability.
He also encouraged younger actors to participate in civic matters and support colleagues who venture into governance, saying the industry’s future depends on shared strength and vision.

Odule concluded by noting that Akindele’s courage has already opened the door for more entertainers to take part in politics without fear or prejudice.
