The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has sentenced a popular TikTok influencer, Murja Ibrahim Kunya, to six months in prison.
The judgment was delivered on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, by Justice Simone Amobeda of the Federal High Court in Kano.
Murja, who is well known on TikTok, was found guilty of abusing the Naira. She had sprayed and stepped on Naira notes while dancing in a hotel room in Kano. The EFCC stated that this action violated Nigerian laws that protect the country’s currency from misuse.
How It All Started
The trouble began in December 2023 when Murja was seen in a TikTok video spraying Naira notes. She danced and walked on them at Tahir Guest Palace, a hotel in Kano.

This act was against Section 21 (1) of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act, 2007, which forbids the abuse of Naira notes.
EFCC operatives first arrested her in January 2025. She was granted bail and told to come back to court later. But she ran away and refused to show up in court.
EFCC Re-arrests Murja
After weeks of searching, EFCC officers re-arrested Murja on Sunday, March 16, 2025. They had been watching her closely before they caught her again.
She was brought to court on May 20, 2025, and she pleaded guilty to the charge.
The charge read in court said she tampered with Naira notes by spraying and stepping on them in the hotel room.
What the Court Decided
After she admitted her guilt, EFCC lawyer Musa Isah asked the court to punish her.

On May 28, Justice Amobeda gave his final decision. He sentenced Murja to six months in prison. However, she was given a chance to pay a ₦50,000 fine instead of going to jail.
The EFCC shared this update through their official social media account on Wednesday.
They reminded Nigerians that the Naira is a national symbol and must be treated with respect.
