A Fateful Decision
Legendary stand-up comedian Atunyota Akpobome, better known as Ali Baba, has captured the hearts of many with his remarkable tales.
Recently, he opened up about a life-changing experience: becoming a father to triplets at the age of 59. His candid revelations on the Leadership Podcast shed light on how a simple desire for another child turned into an unexpected adventure.
Ali Baba’s journey began when he and his wife, Mary, discussed having one more child. After their two daughters moved abroad for their studies, the couple felt the void of an empty nest.
Mary had long harboured a strong wish for a son, and the couple decided to explore their options. Initially, they considered adoption, hoping to provide a loving home to more children.
However, the discussion evolved, leading them to consider biological parenthood through In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF).
The Triplets’ Surprise
In the podcast, Ali Baba shared, “Madam had always wanted to have a son. She had two daughters and we talked about it.” He recounted the humorous yet practical conversation they had about raising additional children, especially considering their existing commitments.
“I didn’t want to be caught up in school runs and PTA meetings,” he admitted, highlighting the reality many parents face as their children grow older.
The couple’s decision to pursue IVF came with a plan: to fertilise two eggs. Ali Baba faced some hesitations about finances, jokingly reflecting on their existing responsibilities.
However, Mary’s inspiring words turned the tide: she reminded him of all the children they were already supporting through the Purple Girl Foundation, which aids over 120 students from primary to university.
“The reason why God put you in this position,” she said, “might be more than taking care of yourself.”
With renewed determination, they moved ahead with the procedure. In a twist of fate, one of the fertilised eggs split into two, resulting in the arrival of three healthy boys.
“When it became three, she and the doctor knew, but they didn’t want to tell me right away,” he shared with a grin. The revelation was delivered with a blend of laughter and disbelief.
“Sometimes when we ask God for one million, he gives you two million,” Ali Baba reflected, demonstrating his typical humour even in surprising circumstances.
Ali Baba’s joy at becoming a father to triplets underscores the unpredictable nature of life, where simple desires can lead to extraordinary outcomes.
As he embraces fatherhood once more, his journey serves as a testament to love, commitment, and the joys of parenting at any age.
