Veteran singer Charles Oputa, widely known as Charly Boy, has opened up about his profound relationship with the late Tyna Onwudiwe.
The acclaimed artist reminisced about their bond, which almost led to marriage, in an emotional revelation that highlights the impact Tyna had on his life.
A Love That Almost Blossomed
In a candid interview, Charly Boy revealed that he and Tyna had a significant conversation about marriage.
However, he ultimately chose to remain friends. “I almost married Tyna. One day, we sat down and talked about it. I said, oh no, I don’t see myself marrying two wives,” he recounted with a hint of nostalgia.
He added, “And by the way, if we get married, we will kill ourselves. Let’s be good friends.” This decision led to a beautiful friendship that lasted until her untimely death.
Charly Boy fondly remembered Tyna as a “beautiful soul” who gave generously to those in need. He described her as a person who would happily share her last penny with a stranger.
Such kindness made her a beloved figure not only to him but to multiple others in their community. “People used to tease me by calling her my wife,” he noted, reflecting on the playful banter they faced.
He explained how rumours swirled about him being the father of some of Tyna’s children, often complicated by their close connection.
A Fight Against Cancer
Their friendship took a serious turn during Tyna’s battle with cancer, a disease she bravely fought until her death on June 29, 2001.
Charly Boy revealed that he actively sought funds to support her during this challenging time. “I wanted somebody, a female to help me with that. People would say, of course, is she not your girlfriend? Is she not your wife?” he explained, shedding light on the complex dynamics of their relationship.
Despite their intentions and efforts, cancer ultimately claimed Tyna’s life, just 17 days after her 47th birthday. Her passing left a significant void in Charly Boy’s life, underlining the deep bond they shared.
As he reflects on their time together, Charly Boy continues to honour Tyna’s memory, reminding fans of the invaluable spirit that she brought into the world.
In commemorating their connection, he encourages others to cherish their loved ones and to recognise the impact that kindness can have on people’s lives.
As the music industry remembers Tyna, her legacy as a compassionate and talented artist lives on through the stories of her friends and family.
