Popular Nigerian artist Paul Nonso Okoye, known as Rudeboy, recently confirmed that the music group PSquare, which also features his twin brother Peter Okoye, aka Mr. P, has parted ways once again.
This marks the second time the duo has split, with their first separation occurring in 2016. They managed a brief reunion in 2021, sparking hopes among fans for new hit albums and vibrant performances. However, the recent news has dashed those hopes, casting uncertainty on the future of one of Nigeria’s most famous music groups.
The Reasons Behind the Breakup
In a candid interview with City FM Lagos, Rudeboy explained some of the difficulties that led to the split. “The plan of our coming back together was to produce a lot of hit albums. But as it is now, I’m just focusing on Rudeboy. Trust me, it is not everything that I would want to say,” he disclosed.
Rudeboy also spoke about accusations that he had downplayed Peter’s contributions to the group. He clarified, “I was being accused of saying that he [Peter] was the dancer and I’m the singer. I know whenever we go to the airport, people ask are you a singer or a dancer? I didn’t know it was touching him. But I know there was a time we came together and said, ‘Don’t allow this thing get to you, you should be proud of what you’re doing. That’s the role you’re playing.’”
Rudeboy went on to highlight issues arising from their song with American rapper T.I, titled “Eja Jo.” According to him, “That was when the issue started. Till today, that song is still on 3 million views because people didn’t hear the PSquare’s voice that they are used to.”
Failed Attempts at Reconciliation
Despite their best efforts to mend their relationship, the attempt to bring back the magic of PSquare seemed to falter. Rudeboy explained, “When we came back together because I didn’t want the issues that happened before, I told my brother to show himself, let us be involved in the creative process together. I told him we should share who carries the tracks equally but still, it wasn’t working.”
The once harmonious PSquare found it challenging to navigate past differences and collaborate effectively. Rudeboy even shared that his brother, Peter, expressed a strong desire to quit. “The new PSquare was peaceful. I needed the past mistakes not to repeat themselves. But then again, he [Peter] said he’s no more doing [no longer interested]. In fact, he told me in the face that he wanted to quit. I asked if we could make it public and he refused.”
Rudeboy also expressed concern for public perception. “But what will happen when I go solo? People will call me a bad person. That’s why I’m speaking up now,” he emphasized.
The Future of Rudeboy and Mr. P
As the news of the split sinks in, fans are left to speculate on the future paths for Rudeboy and Mr P. While Rudeboy remains focused on his solo career, the dynamics of PSquare’s history indicate that the twins might continue to face public criticism over their professional choices.
For now, lovers of PSquare’s unique blend of Afrobeat and R&B may have to content themselves with the musical endeavours of each brother as an individual artist.
