Patience or Protest?

Social media commentator Martins Vincent Otse, widely known by his online moniker VeryDarkMan, has voiced strong criticism towards Folashade Tinubu, daughter of President Bola Tinubu. The controversy erupted after Folashade urged Nigerians to give her father three years to demonstrate his efficacy before forming an opinion about his administration’s performance.

In a recent statement, Folashade pleaded with the public to exercise patience, particularly discouraging participation in a planned hunger protest set to take place from August 1 to August 10.

Economic Woes Highlighted

In a video released on Monday, VeryDarkMan did not hold back his disapproval of Folashade’s appeal. He accused her of being insensitive to the severe economic troubles Nigerians are currently facing under her father’s leadership.

“The first year of this administration has been marred by economic hardship and a notable rise in fuel prices,” VeryDarkMan stated, with visible frustration. “People wouldn’t be complaining if your father’s first year hasn’t been the worst in Nigeria’s presidential history.”

The social media critic urged Folashade to press her father to take serious actions to mitigate the growing economic challenges. He pointed out that the current hike in fuel prices and general living costs are unbearable for the average Nigerian.

Historical Context and Protest Rights

VeryDarkMan also drew attention to President Tinubu’s past actions, highlighting his opposition to fuel price hikes during former President Goodluck Jonathan’s tenure.

“Did you warn your dad when he protested against Goodluck Jonathan for raising the fuel price from N65 to N87? Now look at the scenario; fuel prices have skyrocketed to over N700, and it’s not even readily available. How do you justify that?” he questioned.

While condemning any potential violence that may occur during the protests, VeryDarkMan underscored the importance of standing up for one’s economic rights. “Nigerians are suffering. Protest if you must, but avoid any looting. Stand for your rights, but do it peacefully. Look around – fuel is increasingly expensive, and yet, queues at gas stations are endless. This can’t continue.”

He ended his speech with a call for collective action, emphasizing that the government must address these pressing issues to garner the public’s trust and support moving forward.
