Rising Fuel Prices Add to Misery
Media personality Vincent Otse, widely known as Verydarkman (VDM), has voiced strong disapproval over the public’s focus on the popular reality TV show, Big Brother Naija (BBNaija), while Nigeria faces significant economic challenges.
VDM expressed his concern particularly about the timing, given the country’s current struggles with soaring fuel prices and their cascading effects on the cost of living.
Nigerians are currently grappling with fuel prices that have skyrocketed to N1300 per litre in some areas, leading to long queues at filling stations. This significant increase in fuel prices is expected to drive up the cost of food and essential services, further impoverishing the populace. VDM emphasized that this economic strain could have devastating effects on people’s livelihoods.
Critique of Silence and Government Policies
VDM also took issue with the BBNaija housemates, noting that none of them have spoken out against the harsh economic conditions in the country. While he has no personal vendetta against viewers of the show, he questioned the appropriateness of tuning into entertainment when the nation’s economic troubles loom large. According to him, once the show concludes, the harsh reality of Nigeria’s economic situation will still be there, unchanged and unfixed.
VDM didn’t stop at criticizing the entertainment culture; he also lashed out at the government led by President Bola Tinubu, blaming it for extreme economic policies that he believes are worsening the country’s woes.
He urged the youth to take action in the upcoming presidential elections in 2027, advocating for the removal of the All Progressive Congress (APC) from power to pave the way for better governance.
Netizens react
In light of VDM’s comments, social media reactions have been varied. A user named @praise_bley pointed out, “You people know very well BBNaija starts airing in July every year. What prevented y’all from organizing the protest from January till June ending? Or the hardship only started in July?” This underscores the frustration some feel about the timing and priorities of public dissent.
Another user, @ramseyejike, questioned, “What is the benefit of BBNaija to the common citizens of this country?” echoing VDM’s sentiment that entertainment should not overshadow critical issues. Meanwhile, @usendollar was more action-oriented, declaring, “This protest must be held and be successful,” indicating a readiness to mobilize in response to the economic hardships.
As Nigeria navigates through economic difficulties, voices like VDM’s highlight the tension between entertainment and pressing national issues, calling for a more engaged and responsive citizenry.
