In a high-profile legal battle, popular Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, widely known by his stage name Davido, has taken his ex-partner Sophia Momodu to court, seeking joint custody of their daughter, Imade Adeleke.
The dispute, which has now reached the Lagos State High Court, stems from an originating motion filed by Davido’s legal team, comprising Dr. Olaniyi Arije, Okey Barrah, and others. The motion, dated April 17, 2024, requests the court to grant “an order granting joint custody of Miss Imade Adeleke to the applicant,” or, as an alternative, “an order granting to the applicant unfettered and unrestricted access to Miss Imade.”
The case, marked LD/1587PMC/2024, lists Davido as the applicant, with Sophia Momodu as the sole respondent. The motion is supported by a 44-paragraph affidavit deposed to by Davido himself, providing a detailed account of the circumstances leading to the custody battle.
In the affidavit, Davido states that although he had a relationship with Momodu that resulted in the birth of their daughter on May 14, 2015, the relationship ended some years ago. However, the two had “resolved to take care of our child as biological father and mother.”
Davido claims to have been responsible for the payment of all of Imade’s school fees, ensuring she receives the best possible education. He also asserts that he has been providing money for the rent of the apartment where Momodu and their daughter reside.
Demonstrating his commitment to his daughter’s wellbeing, Davido says he purchased a N200 million apartment in a gated community with a swimming pool and 24-hour power and water supply in Oniru, Victoria Island, Lagos, and offered it to Momodu. However, the offer was reportedly rejected, with Momodu demanding that Davido continue to pay N5 million annually for a rented facility as his contribution towards Imade’s accommodation.
Furthering his efforts to cater to Imade’s needs, Davido claims to have bought a Range Rover Sport Utility Vehicle for the use of both his daughter and Momodu to meet their transportation needs, including taking Imade to and from school. However, he states that he later received a call from Imade’s school that she had been absent for two weeks, and when he inquired with Momodu, she “began to make excuses and complained that the Range Rover SUV was not in a good condition.”
In response, Davido says he provided another vehicle, a Highlander SUV, and an additional sum of N5.8 million for the repair of the Range Rover SUV, ensuring two vehicles were available for his daughter and her mother.
Davido also asserts that he has made commitments to pay for Imade’s living expenses, the fees of her nanny, medical and health care, insurance, and periodic international travel expenses and tickets, all in the interest of his daughter.
However, the singer claims that despite his efforts, Momodu has continued to make “outlandish and Utopian demands to frustrate” him. These demands, according to Davido, include paying the nanny Momodu hired a salary of $800 per month, totalling $19,600 per annum as a lump sum.
Davido alleges that Momodu has shown him “unwarranted cruelty, inflicting so much pain” on him, despite his contributions towards ensuring a better life for their daughter.
The custody battle between Davido and Sophia Momodu is the latest chapter in their tumultuous relationship. In 2021, Momodu expressed her disappointment when their daughter, Imade, took Davido’s last name instead of her own, “Momodu.” She revealed that she had cried bitterly over this decision, as she had hoped her daughter would carry her family’s surname.
Momodu’s mother, however, reportedly made her understand that Imade should bear her father’s name to benefit from Davido’s lineage and inheritance. This explanation, according to Momodu, made her “shut up real quick,” though she still had lingering questions.
The high-profile custody dispute between the celebrity parents has now escalated to the legal arena, with Davido seeking to secure joint custody or, at the very least, unfettered access to his daughter Imade. The outcome of this case is eagerly anticipated, as it will have significant implications for the co-parenting dynamics between the two prominent figures in the Nigerian entertainment industry.
